Stap 1

Mathematics Panels

Create two sturdy cardboards or whiteboards, each showing 6 math questions.

Example: simple additions, subtractions, or multiplications adapted to the children’s level.

You can theme the boards (e.g., “Messi’s Challenges” vs. “Ronaldo’s Riddles”).

Stap 2

Scoreboard

Draw or print two avatars (Messi and Ronaldo) on a vertical board with a 10-point track.

Mark the numbers from 0 to 10 so that each correct score in the basketball round moves the avatar up one point.

Use magnets, bottle caps, or stickers to track progress.

Make the teams

Ask the children: “Who wants to join Team Messi? Who wants to join Team Ronaldo?”
Form two teams of two players each (4 children total).
Try to include children who don’t usually engage in academic games to make them feel involved and excited.

Assign the roles

In each team, one player starts with the math competition and the other with basket practice.
They will switch roles later.

Math competition

The two math players (one per team) stand at their math panels.
The instructor reads each of the 6 math questions aloud.
Players must answer verbally as fast as they can.
For every correct answer, the team earns 1 point = 1 basketball attempt.

Basket (physical education) competition

The basketball players now take turns.
Each team gets as many throw attempts as the number of correct math answers.
Every successful shot scores 1 point on the scoreboard.
Move your Messi or Ronaldo avatar up one space per basket scored.
The instructor can hold the ring steady and cheer both teams on!

Switch roles

After the round, switch: the previous math players now play basketball, and vice versa.
Continue until one team reaches 10 points on the scoreboard.

Celebration experience

Once a team reaches 10 points, everyone gathers around the math panel.
The instructor hands the trophy to the winning team.
Scan the QR code to play We Are the Champions for a festive moment!
Applaud and encourage both teams for teamwork and effort.

This game concept was developed during a StreetwiZe leadership expedition with BARCO in Iasi, Romania, with our local partner Salvati Copiii.

Use different math levels depending on the group’s age.
Mix in fun themes (e.g., “Sports Math,” “Travel Math”) to keep engagement high.
Rotate team compositions to include different children in every round.
Emphasize team spirit over winning — both teams “win” by learning and playing together.
