Divide participants into three groups and explain that we are going to do a short exercise together: we are going to create a short drama through which we want to communicate one thing that we are happy about today.
- Group 1: cannot make any sounds but can mime or act to communicate the message
- Group 2: cannot use words but must use sounds to communicate the message
- Group 3: cannot move but can speak and use their faces to communicate the message

Give the group a couple of minutes to complete the exercise then ask them to come back together to perform.

Ask them what they thought the purpose of the icebreaker. Remind them that communicating involves many different things. Think about how this can affect how people hear what we say, but it can also be useful to help us understand how they are responding to our messages, both consciously and subconsciously.

This is a great lead in to sessions on active listening.
