Make it yourself

1

Step 1

Create the game board

The panel is horizontally split into two parts. The upper part explains how to play the tune “We Will Rock You”. The bottom part explains how to play the song “A Ram Sam Sam’. Both parts have the rhythm of the song explained on the left side by using a ‘Rabbit’ (fast) and ‘Turtle’ (slow) symbols. Basically meaning if you see a rabbit you play your instrument quickly, if it’s a turtle you play it slow.

2

Step 2

Create the game board 2

Then there are symbols of the instruments that we described in the previous section to how which instruments will be playing when. There is also a music staff that indicates how many times the rhythm is played by which instrument.

Good job!

A step-by-step guide to play the game

1

There is a QR code in the upper right corner of the panel, this will redirect you to a Youtube link of the original Queen video. You can play this song for about 1 minute. The children will listen to the tune and will hear the rhythm they will have to play in the following steps.

2

An additional rotation disk has been designed to help the children decide which instrument they will play. All kids can turn the disk and choose their instrument.

3

Explain the “Rabbit” and the “Turtle” symbols and the rhythm that comes with it. Rabbit is a fast clap, turtle is a slow clap. Practice with the group using the symbols to play the ‘We Will Rock You’ tune shortly a couple of times. You will also show them the order of the instruments (hands 1 – maracas 2 etc.)

4

The staff on the upper side shows how the tune is played. The hands have the number 1. On the music staff you can see: “1 1 2 2 3 3…” etc. This means that the children that play with their hands (number 1) will have to play the rhythm twice. After that the maracas join in so now the hands and the maracas play the rhythm twice together before the third (cymbals) join in etc. At the end all 5 groups of children with their instruments will be playing the rhythm together which will give the kids a great feeling as it sounds amazing!

5

Joining in with the vocals is the last and most difficult part. To simplify this part is we altered the real text with “Na na na na (etc.), we will, we will rock you, rock you”. You will probably need to help the children with this part or show them how it’s the done the first couple of times.

6

You can now play the ‘Ram Sam Sam’ song. A very popular children’s song but there is also a QR code available should they not know it. The only difference from “We Will Rock You” is all the instruments start playing at the same time. Also there is an option to do the official dance which can be seen through the QR code as well.

Extra game information

This game was developed during a StreetwiZe leadership expedition in Iasi, Romania by a team of OTTO WORK FORCE.

There is more explanation in the next section.

Then there are symbols of the instruments that we described in the previous section to how which instruments will be playing when. There is also a music staff that indicates how many times the rhythm is played by which instrument.

The things you need to make a panel are limited. With paper, markers and a printer you can make all that is up there. If you want to make the instruments you need a little more.

Specific learning objectives

The panel has 2 songs explained. Both of them require a commitment from the children to work together to get the rhythm synced correctly. This will teach them to cooperate with peers.
