A step-by-step guide to play the game

1

All participants stand in a straight line.

2

The participants close their eyes while the game leader reads one of the statements (see additional game info) out loud.

3

If they agree with the statement, they put one big step forward. If they don’t agree they put one big step back. If they don’t know or don’t have an opinion they stand still.

4

When everyone has made a choice, the participants open their eyes again.

5

The game leader asks for opinions and arguments of participants that agree, disagree and don’t have a clear opinion. Participants can ask each other questions as well.

6

After the argumentation round, the game leader asks if there is anyone who wants to switch positions after having listened to the different arguments and ask sthem to do so as well.

7

If one or more players switch their position ask them why they chose to do so. Was there one argument in particular that made them change their mind, e.g.?

This activity is a part of the StreetSmart sexuality package. The package aims to give youth workers the tools they need to address the topic of sexuality in a playful way with the children and young people they work with, so they can learn to make conscious, healthy and respectful decisions.

Sexuality is a very broad term, encompassing various subtopics. Here, you can find a list of all activities included in our sexuality package to address these different topics:

  1. Sexuality in general: The Sex Alphabet, The Sexuality Goose Game, Yes or No Circle, Sexuality Statement Game
  2. Body (development): Anatomy fundamentals, Who has what?, Physical changes in puberty, Emotional changes in puberty, Life Cycle
  3. Boundaries: Stop!, People to People, Kiss the Teddy Bear, Body Carrousel, (Not) Okay?, Body Twister
  4. Relationships: Choose Your Relationship, My Ideal Partner, In The Worst Way Possible
  5. Gender & sexual orientation: Labels, Sex Change, Who does what?
  6. Safe sex: The Synonym Game, Condom Smugglers, Goodie Bag, STD-Roulette, Can I get pregnant?
  7. Sex & media: Who is responsible?

Variations

  • Sliding scale: Tell the players that in the room/playing field there is an invisible sliding scale. The far left side is "very much", the far right side "not at all" and the space in between varies from "a lot" to "a little". After the game leader has read a statement, the players will indicate to what extent they do or do not agree with a statement by positioning themselves on the sliding scale.
  • Build up: If it's difficult for the group to state their opinion, you can work up to it. The players can just take their position at first without expressing their opinion or giving different arguments. In a second round you could ask the players in one position (e.g. all players that stepped forwards) to have a small group discussion to phrase different arguments and to appoint one spokesperson for the group. Gradually, you can build up to all players expressing their opinion individually.
  • Topic: You can easily vary the statement game to discuss either sexuality as a whole or a specific subtopic (e.g. gender, safe sex, ...).
  • Age: You can easily adapt the statement game to be suitable for all age groups by adapting the statements.

Specific learning objectives

  • Learn to talk about sexuality.
  • Learn how to respectfully express your opinion & listen to the opinion of others.
  • Raise awareness regarding yours and others' frame of reference, values & standards.
